Forget the easy puns.
We are not Lunatics, nor
is what we geneticists did
— and had to do — a lunacy.

When we settled here,
Terra’s gravity inhabited
our very bones. Their calcium
leached out from day one.

Was embedded in our heart
as well. It’s gravity that
takes your blood downwards.
Here fluids rise into our heads.

Embedded too in wombs.
We knew no pregnancy
could last unless we
re-engineered the body.

Unethical you say?
Well, yes, but these
were all volunteers. And
there was no other way

to cast dependence
from our bodies. Make
us free of Terra, create
the people of the moon.

Dr Maturana-Mendelevna became CSO of the Luna-based not-for-profit Lunaria Genetics five years ago at the time of the Homo Lunensis case at the World Court of Human Rights on ‘Definitions of Humanity’. She is known as one of the leading authorities on human genetic engineering for zero and low-gravity environments.
